As a business owner, what do I need to know about online liabilities and security on the internet?

Unless you’re a computer geek that specializes in online security, there’s no way for a business owner to know what’s lurking in the depths of the internet. We all know to keep our anti-virus program up to date, but did you know that you can catch a virus from simply visiting a webpage that has been infected. Or that there are unknown viruses that don’t yet have an anti-virus cure called, “zero day” viruses.

What many people don’t realize is that behind these viruses are actual criminals trying to make an easy million or two. Most viruses have some connection to international mafias because the profits are tremendous and the probability of getting caught is very low. Publicly reported losses incurred due to cybercrime in the U.S. have increased steadily, totaling $560 million in 2009, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Security is becoming tighter than ever in large corporations, which leaves small & medium sized business owners more vulnerable.

Viruses are getting increasingly sophisticated as criminals refine their processes. Email viruses, depending on the complexity, could send out your contact lists, or infect your clients. What happens if they get on your webpage?

Many business owners aren’t aware of viruses that can attach themselves to the company webpage, waiting patiently for the next visitor or client. Have you thought of the potential implications of having your website visitors automatically infected? The most vulnerable business owner is the one who saves a few dollars by using a free program to create their website. Why? Because all the criminal has to do is write one program and s/he has a target market of millions to infect.

Make sure your website is designed and programmed by a reputable company that has stringent anti-virus controls in their software and in their servers. Ask them what their security policy is, and how often they’ll be updating your website with the latest security patches. Whatever option you choose, hiring a consultant can help you determine the security solution that’s right for your business - from automating your file back-ups to scheduling checkups for your computers, and your website for viruses.

Do your due diligence, create an Internet Policy and a Recovery Plan. If you do get a virus, loose all your information, infect your customers, how will you handle it? What will you communicate to your suppliers and customers?

Macs are more secure “out of the box”, but you can make Windows OS’s very safe with tweaking. XP Pro is still a great OS with some Group Policy hardening. Always best to prevent vulnerabilities by taking preemptive steps. Or to use an analogy… best to make sure your ship doesn’t have any leaks before going out to sea than to try to patch them later once you’re out there. An AV should be the last line of defense. I have one, but it never does anything but update itself.

If I could get it to not run in the background, and only on demand, I would be more tempted. My experience on Windows PCs make me wary, while acknowledging it is good to be able to scan suspicious files, even if not as safe as having it always run. Clam Xav, while for Macs, is based on Clam AV, which mainly target Windows viruses. It also has one of the lowest success rates. I keep a copy of the iWork trojan and scan it occasionally with Clam X just to see if they have managed to add detection yet.
